About Rosendale, New York

Rosendale is a town of 5,782 people in the center of Ulster County, along the Rondout Creek. Lenape people lived here when Europeans arrived, and in 1680 Jacob Rutsen bought 600 acres from them on both sides of the creek. He is generally credited with founding the settlement. He leased the land at first, then added to his holdings and built a homestead, where he lived from 1700 until he died in 1730.

Work on the Delaware and Hudson Canal began a natural cement industry here in 1825, and the canal was finished with Rosendale cement in 1828. The Town of Rosendale was created in 1844 out of pieces of Hurley, Marbletown and New Paltz. For years the town also held a village of Rosendale, centered on Main Street, until voters dissolved it in 1977.

  • Cement for the Brooklyn BridgeRosendale cement came from dolomite mined in the Rondout Formation, whose natural magnesium and clay meant it needed none of the additives used in modern Portland cement. Engineers came to trust it, and it went into the Brooklyn Bridge, Federal Hall National Memorial, a wing of the U.S. Capitol and the base under the Statue of Liberty. The industry declined in the early 1900s, but limited mining resumed in 2004.
  • Old mines with new jobsAbandoned dolomite mines still dot the area. The Century House Historical Society keeps one on the Snyder Estate open to visitors as part of its museum of the cement industry. Other mines have grown mushrooms and served as movie locations, and the records company Iron Mountain stores everything from microfiche to backup tapes in at least one of them.
  • Mass in a cooper shopRosendale's Catholics first heard Mass in 1842, when Rev. Myles Maxwell said it in Petrie's cooper shop. St. Peter's opened its first church in August 1850 and became a parish of its own in 1855. Jobs in the cement quarries and on the canal kept bringing Catholic families, so a larger church designed by Arthur Crooks went up, holding its first Mass on Christmas Day 1876. Pastor John J. Gleason added a school and convent in 1881.
