About Lloyd, New York

Lloyd is a town of 11,133 people in Ulster County, on the Hudson River opposite Poughkeepsie. Its land was once part of New Paltz, until the New York State Legislature made Lloyd a town of its own on April 15, 1845. Residents gathered for their first town meeting on May 6, three weeks after the act passed, and chose the officials who would run the new town.

  • Reuben Deyo, first supervisorAt that first meeting in May 1845, voters picked Reuben Deyo as town supervisor and Hasbrouck Lefevre as town clerk. The new town's first justices of the peace were John L. Deyo, Silas Saxton and John B. Howell.
  • Illinois Mountain, 1,125 feetThe Marlboro Mountains split Lloyd from north to south, and their summit in town, Illinois Mountain, stands 1,125 feet high. The mountain holds the town's water reservoirs and draws people outdoors, while the lowest ground in Lloyd lies at sea level along the Hudson shore.
  • Black Creek, once the Swarte KillLloyd sits between two waters. The Hudson River forms its eastern line, and Black Creek, which went by the Dutch name Swarte Kill, runs along the west and separates Lloyd from New Paltz, the town it was carved from.
  • Highland, once a villageHighland, the hamlet on Route 9W in the southeast part of town, was once an incorporated village. Below it, Highland Landing sits by the Hudson. Two crossings, the Walkway over the Hudson and the Mid-Hudson Bridge, link Lloyd with Poughkeepsie on the far bank.
