About Marist College, New York

Marist College is a community of 2,894 people in Dutchess County, along the Hudson River's eastern shore, a little north of Poughkeepsie. It takes its name from the school that fills it. In 1905 the Marist Brothers, a Catholic teaching order founded in France in 1816, came to the Mid-Hudson Valley to open their first American house of studies. They bought a house and land from Thomas McPherson and called it St. Ann's Hermitage, after their founder's Hermitage in France.

The Brothers added the Edward Bech estate in 1908, which gave the Hermitage room to grow to 150 acres. College-level courses began there in 1929. In 1946 New York chartered the school as a four-year college named Marian College, and it still trained Brothers to teach. It became Marist College in 1960 and began admitting lay men. Women followed in the evening classes in 1966 and in the day classes in 1968.

  • A campus the Brothers builtFrom 1947 to 1957 the Brothers gave up weekends, summers and spare hours to build a gymnasium, Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Chapel, Adrian Hall and a home for the student Brothers. Brother Nilus Donnelly oversaw all 12 major buildings they raised, and Donnelly Hall, which they finished in 1962, carries his name. Their first gym still stands inside Marian Hall, which was built around it in 1983.
  • A president at 28Brother Linus Richard Foy took charge of the school in 1958, when he was 28, making him the youngest college president in the country. Under him Marian College became Marist College. The school grew so quickly, and state law so limited federal aid to religious schools, that in 1969 the Brothers handed ownership to the Marist College Educational Corporation, run by a mostly lay board. The Foy Townhouses, finished in 1982, are named for him.
  • Grown to 180 acresDennis J. Murray became president in 1979. During his years enrollment more than doubled, the Poughkeepsie campus spread to 180 acres, and every building was either renovated or newly built. In 1984 IBM, a major employer in the valley, donated nearly $2 million worth of software along with $2.5 million worth of equipment so Marist could bring computers into its classrooms and offices.
  • A library of fieldstoneThe library began on the top floor of Greystone in 1928 and stayed in that building for 35 years before moving twice. In 1999 the James A. Cannavino Library opened, 83,000 square feet of fieldstone chosen to match Greystone, St. Peter's and the Kieran Gatehouse, three stone buildings from the 1860s.
