About Creal Springs, Illinois

The town grew up around mineral springs whose medicinal waters were discovered in 1881. The village was founded on land owned by Edward G. Creal. Its first house went up in November 1882. Health and pleasure seekers flocked there at once and built small homes.

In 1884, H. C. Murrah and his wife founded a seminary at Creal Springs. Mr. Murrah paid for the school building himself. Mrs. Murrah served as its principal from the start. About sixty-five pupils attended by 1887.

  • The town's summer resort heydayCreal Springs was once one of the liveliest spots in the Midwest. Each June, July and August, vacationists came from major cities 200 or 300 miles away. When September arrived, it became a seminary town for about 100 students of the Creal Springs College and Conservatory of Music.
