About Crosby, Texas

Crosby is a community of 3,417 people in Harris County, between the San Jacinto River and Cedar Bayou. In 1860 Sabine and Galveston Bay Railroad and Lumber Company crews laid 41 miles of track from Houston to Liberty, and the stop here was called Gentry after the company's president, A. M. Gentry. Charlie Karcher opened the first store in 1865, and lumber and crops from the nearby country soon passed through the town on their way to market.

The Southern Pacific later took over and rebuilt the line, and a new depot replaced the old Gentry platform. In 1877 the town became Crosby and got a post office. The Handbook of Texas says the name honors G. J. Crosby, a railroad construction engineer, while other accounts credit Josiah Frasier Crosby, a former judge and vice president of the railroad. By 1884 Crosby had 50 people, along with a general store, a Baptist church and a school.

“The result: they changed the town's name to Hope and set about naming a queen.”

  • Humphrey Jackson's cabinHumphrey Jackson and his wife, Sarah Merriman Jackson, arrived in Texas in 1823 among Stephen F. Austin's Old 300. He built a log cabin beside the San Jacinto River, about half a mile west of today's Crosby, and the Baron de Bastrop granted him title to the land on August 16, 1824. He then petitioned the Mexican government for a San Jacinto District, serving as alcalde in 1824, 1825 and 1827. The couple are buried in Crosby.
  • Why Lick SkilletSome say Jackson's 1823 camp north of U.S. Route 90 got the nickname Lick Skillet. The story goes that ox team drivers drank the sweet water from the spring and licked their skillets clean. Local legend holds that people were calling the town Lick Skillet by 1898.
  • Hope, Texas, for 19 daysIn December 1953 the comedian Bob Hope said he wanted a pretty girl from every town named Hope on his television show. Crosby wanted in, so from December 19 to 31 it called itself Hope, Texas. On New Year's Day the town went back to being Crosby.
  • From 600 to over 900In 1905 Crosby's one school had four teachers and 122 students. The town had grown to about 600 people by 1929, but the Great Depression cut that number in half. World War II brought the population back to more than 900, and Crosby has kept growing since.
  • Volunteers since 1942The Crosby Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1942. Today its five stations, all staffed by volunteers from the community, protect Crosby and Barrett Station across a district of 102.8 square miles.
