About Crowley, Louisiana

Crowley is a city of 11,710 people and the parish seat of Acadia Parish, about midway between New Orleans and Houston. Brothers C.C. "Curley" Duson, then sheriff of St. Landry Parish, and W.W. Duson founded it in 1886 on land that still belonged to St. Landry. That same year Acadia Parish was carved from the southwestern part of St. Landry, and Crowley was picked as its seat.

Patrick E. Crowley, who was born in Ireland and worked for the Louisiana Western Rail Road, ran a small facility near Estherwood known as "Crowley's Switch." The Dusons talked him into moving the switch about seven miles east onto their land, and in return they named the town for him. W.W. Duson, general manager of the Southwest Louisiana Land Company, then platted the town, with its avenues running north and south and its streets running east and west.

“In 1885 the site of this town was a prairie over which cattle and stunted Acadian ponies roamed at will, and as far as the eye could see there stretched the rolling prairie unbroken save here and there by a growth of trees along some bayou or coulee.”

  • 174 acres for $80.00Before the town existed, Acadian farmers grew rice on a small scale beside the waterways and left the open prairie to cattle, the main business there since Louisiana was first settled. Land was cheap. In 1886 the 174-acre tract where downtown Crowley later grew up sold for $80.00, a little under 45 cents an acre.
  • Rice City of AmericaRice made Crowley's name. An early parish history called it the greatest rice milling center in America, with 10 of the country's largest mills turning out more than 15,000 barrels a day and handling over half a million bags each season. The Rice Association of America was based here, and a local mill pressed rice by-products into oil and feed. The annual International Rice Festival and the nickname "Rice Capital of the World" keep that history alive.
  • A $75,000 courthouse in 1902As the parish seat, Crowley built one of the finest courthouses in southwestern Louisiana in 1902, at a cost of $75,000. The city also owned its electric light and waterworks systems, and it built a $25,000 city hall and public market.
  • Tallest between Houston and New OrleansPercy Lee Lawrence founded the First National Bank of Crowley. Its 7-story building was once the tallest building anywhere between Houston and New Orleans.
