About Cullowhee, North Carolina

Cullowhee is a community of 7,682 people in Jackson County, set where the Tuckasegee River runs through a valley. Long before any town stood here, a Cherokee village grew up around Cullowhee Mound, an earthwork platform mound raised by the South Appalachian Mississippian culture by about 1000 CE. Digs at the mound show that people were living in this valley as early as 3000 BCE, and the Cherokee later built large council houses on mounds like it, where the town's elders gathered to decide things together.

In the early nineteenth century the Cherokee were forced to give up their land here. European-American settlers then moved onto the old village site, so Cullowhee became one of the earliest white settlements in the county. By most accounts they opened a one-room school in 1830, and over the 1800s they cleared more of the floodplain for farming than the Cherokee had ever planted.

  • Judacullah's PlaceFor years people said the name meant "Valley of the Lilies." It actually comes from the Cherokee phrase joolth-cullah-wee, or "Judacullah's Place." The Cherokee believe Judacullah, a giant warrior and hunter, lived in this area, and he remains an important figure in their religion and culture.
  • A high school in 1889Robert Lee Madison founded Cullowhee High School in 1889 in a small one-story wooden building. It grew into a normal school for training teachers, and after the legislature paid for campus improvements in 1901, it was renamed Cullowhee Normal and Industrial School in 1905. Later it added a four-year college course and graduate programs. Today it is Western Carolina University, with about 12,000 students on roughly 600 acres.
  • Painter's post officeIn 1883 Roland A. Painter opened Painter Post Office inside his store on the Old Cullowhee Road, and other businesses soon set up around it. In 1908 the post office took the name Cullowhee, replacing another office near Forest Hills.
  • The flood of 1940A huge flood in 1940 crested 21 feet above Cullowhee Dam, the highest mark on record. It destroyed almost every building on the north side of the river, while the waterlogged buildings on the south side survived. The town rebuilt on higher ground around Old Cullowhee Road and left the low floodplain behind. Later, dams went up on both of the Tuckasegee's upper forks, the East Fork and the West Fork, to hold back floods.
  • A church from 1880St. David's-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church was built in 1880. It is the oldest surviving building put up by European-American settlers in the area.
