About Glenville, North Carolina
Glenville, once called Hamburg, was the largest town in Jackson County when it incorporated in 1891. In 1941 Nantahala Power and Light dammed the Tuckasegee River. The new Lake Glenville drowned the old town. Residents saved their church and graveyard by moving them just above the new shoreline.
Glenville had the first high school in Jackson County, a private school formed in 1886. It became a public school in 1891. A new school built on a hill above town in 1926 served that part of the county until 1975.
