About Cumberland, Maine
Cumberland is a town of 8,473 people in Cumberland County, reaching from Cumberland Foreside on Casco Bay inland to West Cumberland at the Windham line. It was part of North Yarmouth until March 1821, when it broke away as a separate town. The new town government asked Ephraim Sturdivant, a sea captain, to choose a name. He picked Cumberland and later became the town's first treasurer.
Farming shaped Cumberland for generations, and a handful of working farms survive, among them Double T Orchards, Spring Brook Farms and Sweetser's Apple Barrel & Orchards. Chebeague Island, out in Casco Bay, belonged to Cumberland for 184 years. After votes in the Maine Senate and House, the island left on July 1, 2007, to become a town of its own.
- Merino sheep in 1810Ephraim Sturdivant went to sea when he was 12 and later carried trade to the West Indies and Europe. In 1810 he shipped merino sheep from Portugal to Sturdivant Island, and he is credited as the first to bring the breed to Maine. In the War of 1812, President Madison allowed him to sail the schooner Reaper as a privateer.
- The Apostles on Ephraim's MountSturdivant built his house in 1810, and it stands today at 114 Foreside Road. Twelve tall pines grew on the hill behind it, called Ephraim's Mount, and captains steered by these trees, nicknamed the Apostles, on the way into Portland Harbor. The last of the pines came down in 1935.
- A fair since 1868The first Cumberland Fair ran for two days in October 1868 at the town center, showing off produce and handicrafts and staging an ox-pull and horse racing. The Cumberland Farmers' Club now holds it at the Cumberland Fairgrounds, most years in late September, and the fair is home to the Maine State Pumpkin and Squash Weigh-Off.
- The man behind Simple GiftsJoseph Brackett was born here in 1797 as Elisha Brackett, was raised among the Shakers and rose to lead their society in Maine. He is usually credited with Simple Gifts, a Shaker dance song from 1848. Few outsiders knew it until Aaron Copland worked its melody into Appalachian Spring in 1944.
- Knight's Pond PreserveLandowners dammed Mill Brook in the late 1950s to create Knight's Pond, and in 2015 Cumberland and North Yarmouth joined to buy the land and keep it open. At 213 acres it is the largest undeveloped single property in town. When Portland demolished its Union Station in 1961, broken stone from the building was hauled here, and it still lies among the trees just north of the parking lot on Greely Road Extension.
