About Cypress Gardens, Florida
Cypress Gardens is a community of 10,169 people in Polk County, and it carries the name of the garden park that Dick and Julie Pope created on Lake Eloise. During the land boom, a country club had gone up on the site above the lake. Dick Pope already knew the spot, because he had ridden out there in a horse-drawn wagon to camp when he was 13, and those memories led him to pick it for his gardens.
Work on the land began in September 1932, when federal relief crews earning a dollar a day started digging canals, with a budget of 3,500 man-days. The relief agency later pulled out, so in 1933 Pope and John Snively Sr., a citrus grower, took charge of the work themselves and promised to pay the Canal Commission back. The park welcomed its first visitors on January 2, 1936.
- Julie Pope's green thumbJulie Pope planned the first landscaping for the gardens. She and her friends traveled around the area collecting plants from residents who were willing to give them, and those gifts filled the grounds before the park opened in 1936.
- 45 million visitorsThe Popes laid the foundation of their park in the middle of the Great Depression. In the decades that followed, Cypress Gardens drew 45 million visitors to the shore of Lake Eloise.
