About Dallas, Georgia
Dallas is the county seat of Paulding County, about 30 miles from downtown Atlanta. Established in 1852 on a 40-acre tract, the town was named for George Mifflin Dallas, who served as U.S. vice president under James K. Polk. Its estimated 2020 population was 14,042, and its preserved battle sites, historic courthouse, and rail trail reflect several layers of local history.
- A New County SeatDallas became Paulding County's seat after the creation of Polk County in 1852 placed Van Wert outside the redrawn county.
- Civil War GroundThe battles of Dallas, New Hope Church, and Pickett's Mill occurred nearby during the 1864 Atlanta campaign.
- Pumpkinvine Creek TrestleThe restored trestle extends more than 750 feet, rises 126 feet above the creek, and now forms part of the Silver Comet Trail.
- High GroundDallas has an elevation of 1,043 feet, while Elsberry Mountain reaches the city's highest point at 1,310 feet.
