About Dandridge, Tennessee

Dandridge is a town of 3,344 people and the county seat of Jefferson County, on the north shore of Douglas Lake. Its first permanent settlers came in 1783, and in 1793, a year after the county was formed, the village was chosen as its seat. The town was named for Martha Dandridge Washington, wife of the first president, and it calls itself the second oldest town in Tennessee, after Jonesborough.

Long before that, a large Native American chiefdom called Chiaha stood on Zimmerman's Island in the French Broad River, just southwest of town. Hernando de Soto stayed there for several weeks in 1540. In 1567 Juan Pardo put up a small fort near its main village, as both Spanish expeditions pushed on toward Coosa in present-day Georgia. Zimmerman's Island now lies under Douglas Lake.

  • Saved by Martha's nameIn 1942 the Tennessee Valley Authority began building Douglas Dam on the French Broad, and its reservoir would have covered almost all of downtown Dandridge. Residents wrote to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, reminding her that no other town in the country was named for Martha Washington. The appeal worked: the TVA built a stone levee instead, and it still rises just behind Town Hall, running roughly alongside Main Street.
  • Christmas Eve, 1863In the winter of 1863, the Confederate commander James Longstreet and his Union opponent Ambrose Burnside were fighting for control of Knoxville, and Longstreet was heading for winter quarters around Morristown, Dandridge and Greeneville. On December 24, 1863, as his army fell back toward Morristown, one of his detachments turned on a Union brigade chasing it just north of Dandridge and routed it. The Union troops retreated to New Market.
  • Doctors trained at homeWilliam Moore opened the first medical practice in Dandridge. Later, a son of the wealthy merchant Temple Harris, raised in town, began studying medicine under Dr. H. P. Code of Dandridge on October 10, 1881. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia on March 29, 1884, then came home and went into practice as Code's partner.
  • Interstate 40 in 1975When Interstate 40 was finished north of Dandridge in 1975, town leaders reached out to meet it. They annexed the highway corridor at exit 417, where the interstate shares an interchange with State Route 92.
