About Dannemora, New York

Dannemora is a town of 4,037 people in Clinton County, on the county's western edge west of Plattsburgh. Settlers first came to the area around 1838, and in 1845 Clinton Correctional Facility opened here so that its prisoners could be put to work in the nearby mines. Nine years later, in 1854, Dannemora was carved out of Beekmantown and became a town of its own.

  • Named for Swedish iron countryThe town borrowed its name from Dannemora in Sweden, a region famous for mining iron. The name suited a place whose prison was opened to supply workers for local mines. The town also holds a village called Dannemora, which sits on the southern town line and spills over into the town of Saranac.
  • The prison called "Dannemora"Clinton Correctional Facility, in the village, is one of New York State's maximum security prisons, and many people simply call it "Dannemora." The gangster Lucky Luciano was once held there, and the grounds were also home to the state's mental hospital for the criminally insane. Out in the western part of town, Lyon Mountain Correctional Facility ran for a time as a minimum security prison.
  • Left out of the Adirondack ParkNearly all of the town lies inside the boundaries of the Adirondack Park. Even so, the state law that defines the park makes a point of leaving out Dannemora, along with neighboring Altona, because both towns hold prisons.
  • Chazy Lake at the centerChazy Lake fills the middle of the town, with a hamlet of the same name on its western shore. The Great Chazy River starts at the lake's northern end and runs east to Lake Champlain. In the northwest corner, Upper Chateaugay Lake drains through the Chateaugay Narrows toward the Chateaugay River, which flows north to the St. Lawrence.
