About Altona, New York

Altona is a town of 2,666 people in north-central Clinton County, northwest of Plattsburgh. Long before any town existed, the St. Lawrence Iroquoians lived in this region. Archeologists have found that by 1300 CE they were building fortified villages much like the ones Jacques Cartier described in the mid-16th century. Later in that century the Mohawk are believed to have defeated them and driven them out.

The first settler of European descent arrived around 1800, during the years after the Revolution when New Englanders were moving into New York. In 1857 Altona was carved out of the Town of Chazy. Its early living came from the land, through mining, logging and tanning.

  • Named for a German townAltona takes its name from Altona, now a district of Hamburg in Germany. When the New York town was founded, the German Altona was still a town of its own, first under Danish rule and later under Prussian rule.
  • Ganienkeh, a Mohawk settlementGanienkeh is a Mohawk settlement inside the town. It began after Mohawks occupied Moss Lake, and in the 1970s New York State reached an agreement that let them obtain this land instead.
  • A high school turned prisonAltona Correctional Facility, a medium security state prison, stands in Altona hamlet, north of the hamlet center. The prison grew up around a former high school building that was handed over in 1983.
  • Waters bound for Lake ChamplainThe Great Chazy River drains most of Altona, while the Little Chazy River and Corbeau Creek drain the southeast corner. Every stream in town ends up in Lake Champlain. Miner Lake, near the middle of the town, is ringed by Miner Lake State Park.
