About Datil, New Mexico

Datil is a community of 50 people in Catron County, where U.S. Route 60 meets New Mexico State Road 12 beside the Cibola National Forest. It takes its name from the nearby Datil Mountains, which got theirs from dátil, the Spanish word for date, most likely because the seedpods of local yucca plants look like fruit.

From the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th, ranchers drove their herds past Datil on the Magdalena Stock Driveway, bound from Springerville, Arizona, for the railhead at Magdalena. Wells were spaced ten miles apart along the route. The Bureau of Land Management now runs Datil Well Campground on the site of one of those old wells.

  • A ranch family honoredAda McPherson Morley ran a ranch outside Datil and raised her three children there. One of them, Agnes Morley Cleaveland, was a native New Mexican who grew up on that family ranch. The state now honors mother and daughter together with an Official Scenic Historic Marker.
  • Horse Mountain, 9,490 feetSouthwest of Datil, State Road 12 passes Horse Mountain, a local landmark that rises 9,490 feet. The highway then runs on through the small town of Apache Creek to Reserve, the Catron County seat.
  • A two-room schoolhouseDatil Elementary School, run by Quemado Schools, is a two-room schoolhouse where children of different grades share classes. Older students travel to Quemado Elementary and High School, a K-12 school.
