About Quemado, New Mexico
Quemado is a community in Catron County, New Mexico, and the 2020 census counted 163 people living there. Jose Antonio Padilla made his home here in 1800 and brought flocks of sheep with him. Those flocks were the start of raising livestock in this region of New Mexico, and stock raising became the work this corner of the state was known for.
- Named for burnt stoneQuemado means "burnt" in Spanish. Spanish conquistadors chose the name because blackened stones covered the ground. A fire had scorched the land before the Spanish came in the early 1500s, and the region's scant rainfall has helped the carbon stay on the stones ever since.
- Rodeo stars in Largo CanyonLargo Canyon, south of town, was home to a colony of rodeo celebrities, and for a time that colony made Quemado famous.
- The Lightning Field, 1977Walter De Maria's art installation The Lightning Field dates from 1977. It sits on the land between Quemado and Pie Town.
