About Fence Lake, New Mexico

Fence Lake is a small community of 17 people in southwestern Cibola County, set along New Mexico State Road 36. It lies 63 miles south of Gallup and 40 miles northwest of Quemado. For years the country around it was given over to raising cattle.

That changed during the Great Depression. Families escaping the Dust Bowl in Texas and Oklahoma came west in such numbers that the ranching area was swamped with newcomers, and many of them brought children who needed somewhere to go to school.

  • Schools for Dust Bowl childrenTo make room for the refugee children, Fence Lake asked for schools of its own, along with school buildings in two nearby settlements, Liberty and Trechado. Both of those communities have since disappeared. The Living New Deal, which records projects from the Depression years, lists the Fence Lake School among its sites.
  • Miracle River since 1997In July 1997, Deborah and Jim Green bought 640 acres about 10 miles east of town from Jonnie Head Real Estate, land that had once belonged to the old Tingle Ranch. A small Christian community called Shim Ra Na Ekklisia, or Miracle River, now lives there, and the Greens mail their publications from the Fence Lake Post Office.
  • A census place since 1980The Census Bureau designated Fence Lake a census-designated place in 1980. Its own post office serves the 87315 zip code, and the town's students attend the Quemado Schools district.
