About Dawson, Nebraska

Dawson is a village of 148 people in Richardson County. In 1868 Joshua Dawson put up a mill to grind flour and feed on the North Fork of the Nemaha River, across the stream from the present village. Soon after, he secured mail service, and his post office became known as Dawson's Mill.

When the town was laid out a few years later, it was given a different name, Noraville. The federal place-name record dates the plat to 1871, while Wikipedia puts it in 1872, when the Atchison and Nebraska Railroad reached the spot. Many residents disliked the new name and kept calling their town Dawson, after the miller, and over time that name stuck.

  • A townsite on Draper's landThe ground under the village was first entered as a land claim by W. F. Draper, whose family was among the early settlers of Richardson County. Draper laid off the townsite of Dawson with help from Stephen Conlee Barlow, the husband of his sister.
  • Barlow's wagon shopBarlow, an Indiana-born Civil War veteran, came to the county after the war. After a year on the Stratton farm, where the old county seat of Geneva had been, he homesteaded a mile north and a mile east of Dawson, farming and running a wagon shop. In 1877 he moved into the village and built a new shop where Cooper's store later stood. Four years later he sold it, opened a restaurant and became one of Dawson's leading merchants.
  • Dawson-Verdon schools until 2004For years Dawson's children went to Dawson-Verdon Public Schools. That district served the village until 2004, and Dawson is now part of Humboldt Table Rock Steinauer Public Schools.
