About Humboldt, Nebraska
Humboldt is a city of 800 people in Richardson County, Nebraska. The town was platted in 1868, and it took its name from Humboldt, Tennessee, where one of its early settlers had stayed while serving in the Civil War. Pioneers were already farming the prairie around the townsite before then, at a time when few settlers lived in this part of the county.
- A log cabin east of townJoseph Kelley Cornelius, born in Henry County, Kentucky, in 1830, farmed in Illinois for about nine years before he moved to Richardson County. He settled in Porter precinct, five miles east of Humboldt, and got three hundred and twenty acres from the government, paying as little as ninety cents an acre. He built a small log cabin and broke the prairie sod, and in 1917, at eighty-seven, he was still living in Humboldt.
- Thirty musiciansA few years after the town began, residents formed the Humboldt Philharmonic Society, which had thirty members. For a time it drew a loyal following in town, but the society eventually broke up, and by 1879 it was gone.
- On a Rolling Stones coverThree Ball Charlie grew up in Humboldt. His photograph appears on the front of Exile on Main St., the album by The Rolling Stones.
