About Papillion, Nebraska

Papillion is a city of 24,159 people and the county seat of Sarpy County, just southwest of Omaha. France claimed this land through the eighteenth century, and French explorers named the creek that runs through the middle of town for the butterfly, papillon. Local tradition says they chose the name because butterflies crowded the grass along its banks, and over time the spelling changed to Papillion.

Railroad tracks reached this spot in 1870, and the town was platted that same year. It kept growing through the 1870s as a stop on the line, and residents still often call it Papio. Since the late twentieth century it has grown along with Omaha, and by 2020 it ranked 7th in population among Nebraska's cities.

  • A high school since 1876Papillion-La Vista High School dates to 1876. The building that now holds Papillion Middle School, south of Papio Creek, was the town's high school until August 1971.
