About La Vista, Nebraska

La Vista is a city of 16,746 people in Sarpy County, a suburb of Omaha that sits between Ralston and Papillion. It began in 1959, when a developer drew up plans to build 335 houses on the land. Each one was priced at $9,999, so the new development soon became known as the "House of Nines."

The first families moved into their homes in January 1960. These newcomers chose the name La Vista, meaning "the view," because the site looked out over the Big Papio Creek basin to the southeast. On February 23, 1960, only weeks after the first move-ins, La Vista was incorporated as a city.

  • City Hall in 1964City Hall was the first building the young city put up for its own government, and it was finished in 1964. As more people arrived, La Vista passed new ordinances, set up advisory boards and began hiring city employees.
  • Nebraska's 12th largest cityThe 2020 census count of 16,746 people made La Vista the 12th most populous city in Nebraska. Within Sarpy County, only Bellevue and Papillion, the county seat, are larger.
  • Big Papillion Creek BridgeThe creek whose basin gave La Vista its name is crossed by the Big Papillion Creek Bridge, which joined the National Register in 1992.
