About De Kalb, New York

De Kalb is a town of 2,375 people in St. Lawrence County, southwest of the village of Canton. Judge William Cooper of Cooperstown, the father of James Fenimore Cooper, organized its settlement, and the first party of settlers he led arrived in June 1803. Their hamlet was first called Coopers Village or Williamstown in his honor.

In 1806 De Kalb was split off from Oswegatchie, becoming one of the first ten towns in St. Lawrence County. It later gave up land twice. The section northwest of Beaver Creek went to the new Town of DePeyster in 1825, and the southeastern corner became part of Hermon in 1830.

  • Named for Baron de KalbThe town takes its name from Baron de Kalb, a German officer who served as an American general under George Washington during the Revolution.
  • Hunting parties in the settlementIn the early years, St. Regis and St. François Native Americans often passed through the young settlement while they were out on hunting expeditions.
  • A rail center from 1862East DeKalb, on what is now US 11, was the business center for its part of town until 1862. That year a spur rail line to Ogdensburg was built, and DeKalb Junction grew up around it to the northeast. It went on to become the town's railroad center.
