About De Peyster, New York
Founders first wanted to name the town Stilwell, after leading resident Smith Stilwell. He turned the honor down. He hoped a landowner would give the town a generous gift in return for the name. Letters went to landowner Frederic de Peyster, and his name was chosen when the town formed in 1825.
