About Decatur, Texas
Decatur is the Wise County seat, located near the county's center where the Grand Prairies meet the western Cross Timbers. Established as Taylorsville in 1856, the community took the name Decatur two years later. Its population was 6,538 in the 2020 census.
- Named for a HeroIn 1858, legislator Absalom Bishop arranged to rename Taylorsville in honor of naval hero Stephen Decatur.
- Early Civic LifeA post office and the first school opened in 1857, followed by a courthouse in the early 1860s.
- Railway EraThe Fort Worth and Denver Railway arrived in 1882, helping Decatur prosper as a shipping point and agricultural market.
- Courthouse LandmarkJames Riely Gordon designed the Wise County Courthouse, completed in 1896 and later listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Chisholm Trail LegacyThe eastern branch of the Chisholm Trail passed near Decatur and is remembered through the annual Chisholm Trail Barbecue.
