About Decherd, Tennessee

Decherd is a city of 2,379 people in Franklin County, right next to the county seat of Winchester. Peter Decherd came here from Franklin County, Virginia, in 1831 and started a plantation later known as Hundred Oaks. In the 1850s he gave the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad a right-of-way across his property. When the line was finished through the county in 1851, the only house on the site was Richard Holder's log cabin. A depot went up with Joseph Carter as agent, and the stop took Peter S. Decherd's name.

The thirty-first General Assembly made Decherd a town on February 14, 1856, and it was incorporated a second time after the Civil War, on January 30, 1868. In 1885 the town gave up its charter so the Four Mile Law, a liquor law tied to schools in incorporated communities, would not apply there. Decherd stayed unincorporated until the General Assembly chartered it again on April 22, 1901.

  • Where two railroads metThe main line through Decherd crossed the Cumberland Mountains between Cowan and Sherwood in deep cuts and a tunnel 2,200 feet long. Before long a second road, the Decherd, Fayetteville & Columbia Railroad, ran west from Decherd to Fayetteville. Its stops in the county were Decherd, Winchester, Belvidere, Maxwell and Huntland, so Decherd became a junction town just two miles from the county seat.
  • Union armies in 1862 and 1863During the Civil War, Gen. Buell's Union army moved forward as far as Decherd. It pulled back in August 1862, when Buell retreated toward the Ohio River. On July 2, 1863, Gen. Rosecrans's army took Winchester, and its troops held the whole surrounding countryside in force.
  • The tornado of 1952On February 13, 1952, a violent F4 tornado struck Decherd. The worst damage was on the north side of town.
  • Nissan engines since 1997Nissan opened its Powertrain Assembly Plant at Decherd in 1997. More than 1,600 people work there, building 1.4 million engines a year for Nissan cars, SUVs and trucks, plus powertrains for the electric Nissan Leaf. A second plant opened on the same site in 2014 to make engines for Infiniti and Daimler.
