About Sewanee, Tennessee

Sewanee is a community of 2,535 people in Franklin County, set at 1,929 feet high on the Cumberland Plateau's western edge. The University of the South fills most of its northern half, and the Episcopal Church's southern dioceses founded the school and still own it. Town and school are so closely bound that the university itself usually goes by the name Sewanee.

Coal connected the mountaintop to the wider world early. In 1858 the Sewanee Mining Company completed a railroad from Tracy City that ran past University Place and came down to meet the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad near Cowan, at the foot of the mountain. A wagon road with a gentle grade also climbed up from Sherwood, a few miles away, to the university.

  • A stone block at University PlaceAn old county history found the settlement at University Place with a fine depot and a stone business block three stories tall. Col. S. G. Jones kept a large frame hotel there and also worked an extensive coal mine, and the village supported six general stores and a drug store.
  • The Sewanee Review since 1892Since 1892 the university has put out The Sewanee Review, a journal of literature that has never missed a year. Writers still gather on the mountain every summer, when the university holds the Sewanee Writers' Conference.
  • A month of music each summerThe Sewanee Summer Music Festival is a month-long camp held every year. Young orchestral musicians come to Sewanee to study with experienced teachers and conductors.
  • A library on the bluffThe Templeton Library was built to hold the papers of Sir John Templeton, a financier who came from the area. It stands on a bluff of the plateau looking out over the valley below. It is no longer a library and now holds several private apartments.
