About Dedham, Maine

On the night of April 11, 1961, two F-101 Voodoo fighters left Dow Air Force Base to meet an unknown aircraft. It proved to be a Strategic Air Command bomber. Returning in icy rain, the second jet struck Bald Mountain, killing both crewmen. A wrongly set altimeter had caused a 1,000-foot error.

  • Name origin and first settlerThe town was named after Dedham, Massachusetts. Nathan Phillips first settled it in 1810, and Phillips Lake bears his name.
