About Delphos, Ohio

Delphos is a city of 7,117 people that sits across the line between Allen and Van Wert counties, about 14 miles northwest of Lima. It began as four rival towns: Howard to the northwest, Section 10 on the east side, Bredeick Street just south of Howard, and East Bredeick. In 1851 the four agreed to join as one town, and they named it Delphos after the Greek god Delphus.

The first people to settle here came to build the Miami and Erie Canal, which ran 274 miles from Cincinnati to Toledo. The work took 20 years, and on July 4, 1845, the first canal boat, with Ohio's governor aboard, passed through Delphos. The canal turned the town into one of the major ports on the route, where freight moved between boats and the new railroads, and by 1879 more than 100 factories here made goods for buyers across the country and overseas. Once railroads took over long-distance freight, Delphos lost its place as a trading hub.

  • Father Bredeick's landFather John Otto Bredeick came from Verl, Germany, and in 1840 the priest bought a tract of land here. Two of the four towns that merged into Delphos, East Bredeick and Bredeick Street, carried his name. The Bredeick-Lang House, which stands in the Van Wert County part of the city, joined the National Register in 1982.
  • St. John's on Franklin StreetSt. John Catholic Church stands at 110 N. Franklin St. and joined the National Register in 1980. The parish, part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Toledo, also runs St. John's High School and St. John's Elementary, both on the Allen County side of town.
  • 188 feet above Lake ErieThe 1885 History of Allen County, Ohio wrote about Delphos at length, covering the canal, the railroads and the railroad shops. It put the town's elevation at just 188 feet over Lake Erie, compared with 263 feet at the depot in Lima.
  • Stadium Park since 1940The football stadium in Stadium Park was built in 1940 and holds 3,900 people. Both of the city's high school teams play there: the Delphos Jefferson Wildcats and the St. John's Blue Jays.
