About Gomer, Ohio

Gomer is an unincorporated community of 345 people in the northern part of Sugar Creek Township, Allen County. Three Welshmen founded it in 1833, and for decades afterward it stood at the center of Welsh life in America. The village was laid out in 1850, and today it sits at the crossing of Gomer Road and the Old Lincoln Highway, a short way north of U.S. Route 30.

“The Welsh put up a good log church in what is now Gomer, in 1838. These people have greatly increased of late years, by immigration, and the membership of that church has become quite numerous.”
History of Allen County, Ohio, 1885
  • The Snow Cruiser crash of 1939Admiral Richard E. Byrd's Antarctic Snow Cruiser was crossing a small bridge on the Lincoln Highway at Gomer on October 28, 1939, when its damaged steering failed. The giant vehicle left the road and ended up in a stream. It stayed there for 3 days, and 125,000 people turned out to look at it before it moved on.
  • A post office from 1854Gomer got a post office under its own name in 1854, four years after the village was laid out. That office served the community for more than a century before it closed in 1961. Mail for Gomer still carries the ZIP code 45809.
