About Lima, Ohio
Lima is a city of 35,579 people and the seat of Allen County, on the Ottawa River in northwest Ohio. The Shawnee held this land as the Hog Creek Reservation from 1817 until 1831, when the United States forced them to give it up and move to Kansas. The Ohio legislature then called for a county seat, and the new town was named for Lima, Peru, a major source of quinine, a medicine against malaria that people in the Great Black Swamp wanted.
The first courthouse went up in 1831 and a school followed in 1832. Lima became a city in 1842, with Henry DeVilliers Williams as its first mayor. On May 19, 1885, Benjamin C. Faurot was drilling at his paper mill in search of natural gas when he hit oil instead, 1,251 feet down in Trenton limestone. Hundreds more wells followed, and by 1886 the Lima field led the nation in oil.
- Taking out the sulfurLima's crude was full of sulfur and smelled bad, but John D. Rockefeller invested in it against the advice of Standard Oil's board. He put J.W. Van Dyke, his refining expert, in charge of building and operating the Solar Refinery. Working with the German chemist Herman Frasch, Van Dyke found a way to remove the sulfur, and Lima oil could then be refined into good kerosene and fuel oil.
- The first Shay locomotiveThe Lima Agricultural Works opened in 1869 and changed its name and products over the years. As Lima Machine Works it built the first Shay-geared locomotive in 1882. In 1925 Lima Locomotive Works, Inc. turned out the Lima A-1, a 2-8-4 engine that served as the prototype of the modern steam locomotive.
- Dillinger's jailbreak in 1933In 1933 John Dillinger was being held in the Allen County Jail after his arrest for the robbery of the Citizens National Bank in nearby Bluffton. His gang broke him out and killed Sheriff Jess Sarber during the escape. The murder made Dillinger the FBI's most wanted man.
- Home of the Abrams tankWork began in May 1941 on the Lima Army Tank Plant, which first made cast gun tubes. During World War II it prepared vehicles for Europe, among them the T-26 Pershing and the M5 light tank, and at its peak it employed more than 5,000 people. Now called the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center and run by General Dynamics, it is the only plant that builds the M1 Abrams tank.
