About Desloge, Missouri
Desloge is a city of 4,823 people in St. Francois County, and it grew up around a lead mine. Firmin René Desloge came from France and settled in Potosi. His son, Firmin V. Desloge II, learned mining from him and bought up claims around what are now Desloge and Bonne Terre.
Desloge first worked a claim just north of Bonne Terre, but fire destroyed his concentrating plant there in 1883. He turned to his land farther north and merged several local mining companies into the Desloge Consolidated Lead Company. In 1887 his crews cleared the ground and built company houses for his staff in a settlement called "Desloge Town," west of today's railroad tracks. His new shaft and concentrating plant began running in 1892, and the area became one of the country's leading lead mining centers.
- Sold to St. Joe in 1929Firmin Desloge II moved to St. Louis in the early 1900s, while his son, Firmin Desloge III, stayed on as superintendent of mines until he took his own family to St. Louis in 1921. The Desloge family's mining days ended in 1929, when the St. Joe Lead Company bought the Desloge Consolidated Lead Company from them.
- A park in the old pitsWhen Firmin Desloge II died in 1930, he left his family 47 acres holding the hand-dug pits of the first lead workings and deeply worn wagon ruts. The family gave the land for a park, now Firmin Desloge Park, in honor of the area's mining families. In June 2012 three of his great-great-grandsons came back for the dedication of a bronze medallion given by his great-grandson Steven Rockwell Desloge.
- A city in 1941Desloge was incorporated as a city on March 7, 1941, and D.E. Brown served as its first mayor. The city keeps the founding family's French name, pronounced də-LOHZH.
