About Dickeyville, Wisconsin

Dickeyville is a village of 1,015 people in Grant County, in the southwest corner of Wisconsin. Charles Dickey, an early settler and surveyor, opened a general store here in the early 1840s. When the post office opened in 1849, Dickey became its first postmaster, and the settlement took his name as Dickeysville.

The spelling later lost its extra letter, and the place became Dickeyville. It sits about halfway between Platteville, Wisconsin, and Dubuque, Iowa, and many of its people work in those larger cities.

  • A village without a platDickeyville was never formally platted. The old county history found no recorded survey of the village site. Instead, its buildings went up along the Dubuque and Lancaster road, so the road itself shaped the town.
  • Dickeyville Camp No. 6451The county history records that the village had its own camp of the Modern Woodmen, the fraternal society, named Dickeyville Camp, No. 6451. G. W. Hoadley led it as its V. C.
  • The Dickeyville GrottoThe Dickeyville Grotto stands in the heart of the village.
