About Dime Box, Texas

Dime Box is a community of 207 people in Lee County, Texas. It was first known as Brown's Mill, and its post office went by that name until it shut in December 1883. Mail meant for Brown's Mill kept getting mixed up with mail for Brownsville, so when the office opened again the next spring, the town had a new name, Dime Box.

The town moved in 1913, when the Southern Pacific Railroad laid its tracks about three miles southeast of the first settlement. Most families and businesses packed up and rebuilt beside the new line, and the railroad town kept the name Dime Box. The place they left behind has been called Old Dime Box ever since.

  • The March of Dimes on CBSIn the 1940s the whole country heard about Dime Box. CBS chose the town as the starting point for the March of Dimes fundraising drive and opened the campaign with a broadcast from there.
  • A haircut in Blue HighwaysThe author William Least Heat-Moon passed through Dime Box on the back-road trip he wrote about in his book Blue Highways. While he was in town, he got his hair cut by the local barber, Claud Tyler.
  • Capital of a second TexasHoward Waldrop's novel Texas-Israeli War: 1999 imagines a future in which Texas breaks away once more and makes Dime Box the seat of its new government. The town also appears on television: the Walker, Texas Ranger episode Swan Song opens with a scene set there.
