About Downsville, New York
Downsville was named in honor of Abel Downs. Early settlers ground their corn in small mills called tub mills. Before the Revolution, William Rose ran one at the falls on the little brook above the village. His mill gave Tub-mill Brook its name.
The hamlet takes its name from Abel Downs, who ran a tannery there. In 1954, New York City finished a dam on the East Branch of the Delaware at Downsville. The dam formed the Pepacton Reservoir, which helps supply the city's water.
