About Rockland, New York

Rockland is a town of 3,290 people in northern Sullivan County, where it meets Delaware County to the northwest and Ulster County to the northeast. Like most of this corner of New York, its land was once part of the Hardenburgh Patent, and settlers first arrived around 1789.

The area was the western part of the town of Neversink until 1910, when it was set off as the separate town of Rockland. Most of the town lies inside the Catskill Park, and it covers 95.2 square miles, nearly all of it land.

  • Roscoe was Westfield FlatsThe hamlet of Roscoe, in the southwest corner of the town, used to be called Westfield Flats. The old name lives on in the Roscoe Presbyterian Church and Westfield Flats Cemetery, which are listed together on the National Register. Grooville, in the southeast, also had an earlier name: Emmonsville.
  • Hamlets named for landownersDe Bruce, five miles east of Livingston Manor, takes its name from a landowner named Elias Desbrosses. Livingston Manor, the hamlet in the south of the town, is named for Dr. Edward Livingston.
  • A covered bridge at BeaverkillThe hamlet of Beaverkill sits near the town's northwestern line. Its covered bridge joined the National Register in 2007.
