About Dutchtown, Missouri

Dutchtown is a community of 163 people in Cape Girardeau County, where Routes 25 and 74 meet. Martin Rodner arrived in America in 1776 as a Hessian soldier serving the British during the Revolution. In 1801 he brought his family here and ran a water mill on Hubble Creek. His American neighbors struggled to say his name, so he became Rodney and his mill became Rodney's Mill. He died in 1827.

Swiss and German families began settling near the mill in the mid-1830s and named their settlement Spencer. The name later changed to Dutchtown, which came from Deutsch, the German word for German. The village grew to include a blacksmith and a bricklayer, and both Bloomfield Road and a railroad line ran through it.

“The Dutchtown Loop, a road through the village, was on the edge of a swamp. Before the Diversion Channel was built, the Castor River flowed into the lowlands near Dutchtown.”
Southeast Missourian, 2006
  • A first sermon in 1799Randol Creek, near present Dutchtown, was where a preacher gave the first Protestant sermon and performed the first baptism by immersion west of the Mississippi River, in 1799.
  • The Swamp ChurchSettlers founded the German Evangelical Church in 1836 and worshiped first in a log building, then in a brick church raised in 1887. Because the village sat at a swamp's edge, people also called it the Swamp Church. The congregation stayed active until about 1900, and the church still stands beside its cemetery of about 150 markers.
  • A village from 1998 to 2018Residents petitioned to incorporate Dutchtown, and it became a village in February 1998. Floods kept coming, in 1973, in 1993, 1995 and 1998, and again in 2002, 2011, 2013, 2016 and 2017, and several people had already sought federal buyouts. Worn down by the flooding, the village disincorporated on March 15, 2018, with its assets set to pass to the county.
