About Duvall, Washington
Duvall is a city of 8,034 people in King County, above the Snoqualmie River. Two loggers, Francis and James Duvall, came here in 1871 and homesteaded the hillside where the town center stands today. The first town, Cherry Valley, sat half a mile downstream on the riverbank. Many of its early settlers had fought in the Civil War and had earned the right to homestead.
In 1909 the Great Northern and the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railroads began laying track along the river, and Cherry Valley stood in the way. After long negotiations the railroad agreed to move the town, so over the next year houses and shops went south and uphill to the Duvall land. The new town was called Cosgrove for a short time, after Governor Samuel G. Cosgrove, before it took the Duvall name. It incorporated on January 6, 1913.
“The Cherry Valley Cemetery, which was moved to the neighboring community of Novelty, was often so wet from runoff that graves had to be bailed out minutes before interment.”
- A boom after the moveMoving the town set off a real estate boom. Crews laid out streets and sidewalks, a train depot went up, and a movie house and a drug store opened. A new school was built for 80 students, and a year later 139 children were in its classes. By 1911 the town had four hotels and its own newspaper, the Duvall Citizen.
- Concerts on the big rockLon Brown, Duvall's first mayor, also played in the town band. Now and then the band climbed on top of the big rock in the ravine that is now Taylor Park, while townspeople sat on logs below and listened. The big rock is still there.
- The Piano Drop of 1968On April 28, 1968, nearly 3,000 fans came to a rock concert on a Duvall farm, and a helicopter let an upright piano fall from the sky. Country Joe and the Fish were among the performers. Locals still call it the Piano Drop, and it inspired the Sky River Rock Festival later that year.
- The depot that stayedThe railroad closed the Duvall depot in 1936, since roads had become the main way in and out. In 1955 Ray Burhen bought the building and moved it to the other side of the railbed. He later gave it to the City of Duvall, which moved it to Depot Park. The last train through town blew its whistle in 1973.
