About Redmond, Washington
Redmond is a city of 73,256 people in King County, at the north end of Lake Sammamish. Luke McRedmond and his wife Kate, both from Ireland, settled on 80 acres in the spring of 1871, and Warren and Laura Perrigo bought 80 acres nearby that June. The Perrigos opened an inn called Melrose House. It was so popular that the village, first called Salmonberg for the chum salmon in its streams, became known as Melrose, and a post office by that name opened on June 28, 1881. McRedmond became postmaster in December 1882 and had it renamed Redmond as of March 19, 1883. The two families quarreled, but the name stuck.
Trains of the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway arrived in 1889, and logging picked up. On May 11, 1891, the McRedmonds filed the first town plat, less than 10 blocks of today's historic downtown, and by 1900 there were 271 people. Washington required 300 residents before a town could incorporate, and the 300th, Ernest Adams III, was born on November 24, 1912. Residents quickly petitioned for a vote, approved incorporation 94 to 9, and Redmond became a town on December 31, 1912, with Fred Reil as its first mayor.
- Tools 10,000 years oldIn 2015 archaeologists digging near Redmond Town Center found stone scrapers and spear points at least 10,000 years old. A chemical test on one tool showed that the people who made it ate bison, bear and salmon.
- The Campbell Mill, 1905The Campbell Mill opened in 1905 in Campton, a company town just southeast of Redmond, on pilings over the northeastern corner of Lake Sammamish. The company laid 16 miles of track into the woods and housed its workers in bunkhouses built on rail car frames, so they could follow the cutting. Fire destroyed the mill in 1924, and it was never rebuilt, but its pilings could still be seen in the water in 2025.
- Mayor for 30 yearsBill Brown came to Redmond as a boy in 1887. He and his brother Alfred later ran the B&B Logging Company together. In 1913 he built a two-story brick saloon at Cleveland Street and Leary Way, which closed when state prohibition began in 1916. The building later held a hardware store, a dance hall, town council meetings and a pizza parlor, and since 2007 it has been the Matador restaurant. Brown was mayor from 1919 to 1949.
- Derby Days since 1939Derby Days started in 1939 as a bicycle race around Lake Sammamish. By the 1960s it had grown to include a big parade and a raffle for a new car. The races no longer circle the lake, and in 2024 they were run at Marymoor Park and its Jerry Baker Memorial Velodrome during a two-day festival with music, craft markets, carnival rides and a drone show.
- Nintendo and MicrosoftNintendo of America set up its headquarters in Redmond in 1984, and Microsoft followed in 1986. Their arrival drove a commercial boom through the 1990s, and in 1997 Redmond Town Center, a large regional shopping center, opened on the grounds of an old golf course.
