About Eagle Lake, Illinois
Eagle Lake is a community of 76 people in Will County, in the northeast corner of Washington Township, 5 miles northeast of Beecher and 1.5 miles west of the Indiana state line. In 1878 the county history described it as a small village at the edge of the little lake that shares its name, and it noted that the lake had already shrunk once draining began.
- Cranberries from the marshBefore the draining started, the lake and its swamp gave up hundreds of bushels of cranberries every year, and people came to gather them. Draining the water ended that harvest, and by 1878 the county history reported that the cranberry trade here was gone.
- A lake once much largerBy 1878 Eagle Lake covered only a quarter of Section 7, along with the swamp beside it, which spread over nearly all of that section and of Section 18. Before the draining, the lake had reached much farther.
- Counted on its own in 2020Eagle Lake has never incorporated as a village. The Census Bureau first listed it as a census-designated place just before the 2020 census, which counted 76 people here.
