About Goodenow, Illinois
Goodenow is a community of 60 people in Will County, lying between Crete on its northern side and Beecher on its southern side. Surveyors first measured this land in 1839, and in 1853 George Goodenow bought 160 acres of it.
In 1870 the Chicago, Danville & Vincennes railroad was finished across Crete and Washington Townships, giving travelers a direct line between Chicago, Danville, Evansville and St. Louis. Goodenow became one of the stops along the route. Two years later, in 1872, the land was divided into "blocks, lots, streets and alleys" for a town.
- Goodenow Grove Nature PreserveThe 700-acre Goodenow Grove Nature Preserve lies just east of the community. The area around it is thick with woods, where old oak trees and prairie grass survive, and many of the houses stand on large wooded lots.
- On the Valparaiso MoraineGoodenow sits on the Valparaiso Moraine, and the small stream called Plum Creek flows through the area. South of town, open farmland stretches for several miles before reaching Beecher.
- The Beecher LandfillFor years the area's biggest industry was the Beecher Landfill, which accepted trash hauled in from across the Chicago metropolitan area. The landfill has since closed.
