About Earling, West Virginia
Earling is a community of 76 people in Logan County, West Virginia, set in the south-central part of the county along the Guyandotte River's eastern bank. It went by Ferndale and then Manbar until 1906, when it was renamed Earling for a pioneer settler. Seven years later a coal company built a camp here, and for decades the town lived by mining.
- A coal camp from 1913The Hutchinson Coal Co. built Earling as a coal camp in 1913, and it grew into a big one. The West Virginia Coal & Coke Corp. later took over the camp and dug coal there from 1925 to 1951. Today only a few homes are left of the old camp.
- Ferndale, Manbar, then EarlingBefore it was Earling, the community was known first as Ferndale and later as Manbar. The name changed to Earling in 1906, honoring a pioneer settler of the area.
- Post office closed in 1989Earling kept its own post office until July 1, 1989. After it closed, the community began sharing a ZIP Code with its neighbors Lyburn and Taplin.
- On the GuyandotteThe town sits beside the north-flowing Guyandotte River, about 2.75 miles from the town of Man. West Virginia Route 10 once ran through the center of Earling, but the road became a four-lane highway that now passes on the west side of the river.
