About Kistler, West Virginia

Kistler is a community of 420 people in Logan County, set along Buffalo Creek about 1.5 miles northeast of Man, with Accoville just upstream. The town grew up around coal mining on the C&O's Buffalo Creek Branch, and the Deegans Coal Company was the first to dig coal at Kistler and send it out on the railroad. In its busiest years the town had several company commissaries, a movie theater and dozens of homes.

  • A theater built by three minesKistler's moving picture theater was a joint project of three of the town's earliest coal operators: the Eagle Island, Sekay and Bengal coal companies. It stood among the commissaries and company houses of the mining camp.
  • The Buffalo Creek flood of 1972Because Kistler lies along Buffalo Creek, the community was struck by the Buffalo Creek flood in 1972.
  • 420 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 420 people in the Kistler census-designated place, down from 528 in 2010.
