About Amherstdale, West Virginia

Amherstdale is a Logan County community of 350 people, set in the Buffalo Creek valley about 5.5 miles by road northeast of Man, where the creek empties into the Guyandotte River. Its census place also includes the nearby settlements of Becco, Fanco and Braeholm, and the community grew up around the valley's coal mines.

  • Amherst Coal, 1912 to 1951The Amherst Coal Company got its start in Amherstdale in 1912. It mined coal for nearly four decades before it stopped operating in 1951.
  • Named for Amherst CoalThe town took its name from the Amherst Coal Company. Amherst Coal opened its very first mine at Amherstdale and ran the business from here as its headquarters for many years. Other coal companies dug mines in the town as well.
  • The Buffalo Creek floodAmherstdale was one of the places struck by the Buffalo Creek flood disaster. The flood killed and injured people along the valley and left thousands of them without homes.
