About East Berwick, Pennsylvania
As Berwick's industries grew, its people spread past the borough's one-mile limits. East Berwick, in Salem Township of Luzerne County, grew up as one of the overflow suburbs. By 1915, its 1,350 residents depended largely on the car works, shops and foundries of Greater Berwick.
Evan Owen first settled the wider Berwick region in 1786. East Berwick grew quickly in the late 1800s. Thousands of workers at the American Car and Foundry Company plant made their homes here.
