About East Greenwich, New Jersey

East Greenwich is a township of 11,706 people in Gloucester County. The New Jersey Legislature created it on February 10, 1881, joining land from the east side of Greenwich Township with land from the west side of Mantua Township.

Its villages had been linked by rail since October 1869, when the Swedesboro Railroad opened a line from Woodbury to Swedesboro that ran through Clarksboro, Mickleton and Mount Royal. The West Jersey Railroad leased the line, and today freight trains of the Southern Railroad of New Jersey use the same track. The township has grown quickly in recent decades, from 5,430 people in 2000 to 9,555 in 2010.

  • Quaker roots in MickletonMickleton, a village of 2,285 people, still holds reminders of its Quaker past: the Friends Meeting House and the Little Red School House, which dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. Amos J. Peaslee, born in 1887 to a Quaker family in nearby Clarksboro, later became the United States Ambassador to Australia, holding that post from 1953 to 1956.
  • Intercultural educationBorn in Clarksboro in 1892, Rachel Davis DuBois grew up on a Quaker farm. In 1924 she began teaching at Woodbury High School, where she put on student assemblies about what immigrant and ethnic groups had given American life. That work grew into the Woodbury Plan. She went on to direct the Service Bureau for Human Relations, and in 1939 she helped launch the CBS radio series Americans All, Immigrants All.
  • A champion hitter in 1887Hardy Richardson was born in Clarksboro in 1855 and played 14 seasons in the major leagues. With Detroit he was one of the hitters known as the "Big Four," and the team won the 1887 World Series.
