About Gibbstown, New Jersey
Gibbstown is a community of 3,822 people in Greenwich Township, Gloucester County. It has no town government of its own, and the census counts it as a place within the township. Its best-known building is the C. A. Nothnagle Log House, thought to date from around 1638. If that date is right, the house is the oldest in New Jersey and the oldest log house still standing anywhere in the United States.
“The Nothnagle Log House is one of the few remaining log houses of a type once prevalent in the Delaware Valley. The full dovetailing at the corners is a detail considered by some authorities to be of Finnish origin and is certainly early.”
- Built without a single nailThe builders of the Nothnagle house cut oak logs square by hand, stacked them flat and locked them together at the corners with dovetail joints. They used no metal fasteners anywhere in the walls. The house was nominated in 1971 and joined the National Register in 1976.
- Patched by hand with mudHarry and Doris Rink bought the log house in the 1970s and set out to keep it sound. They tracked down a historically correct mix of mud and clay from Salem County and pressed it between the logs by hand to repair the chinking. The house was still preserved when it went up for sale in 2022.
- The Paulsboro RefineryMost of the Paulsboro Refinery sits in Gibbstown, beside the Port of Paulsboro on the Delaware River and Mantua Creek. The port long ranked among the nation's busiest for moving petroleum by ship, and studies finished in 2012 found it well suited to building and shipping wind turbines and their platforms.
