About East Liberty, Ohio
East Liberty is a community of 371 people in Perry Township, Logan County, about 10 miles east of Bellefontaine and 46 miles northwest of Columbus. The town was platted in 1834, and two years later, in 1836, it got a post office that has stayed open ever since.
Otter Creek runs through the south end of town and flows northeast to Mill Creek, which carries its water east to the Scioto River. Today U.S. Route 33 runs just past the town, and State Routes 292 and 347 pass through it.
“A man named David Reed taught in East Liberty about 1815-16. John Garwood was the next teacher. Simpkin Harriman was also an early teacher.”
- Central Ohio College, 1882Alonzo Skidmore, a Disciples of Christ minister, organized Central Ohio College in East Liberty in 1882, and the school was formally established the next year. It did well for a time, but money troubles grew, and it closed in the late 1890s.
- Honda's plant since 1989In 1989 Honda opened its East Liberty Auto Plant here, one of the company's major car factories, in a community of only a few hundred people.
- Where cars are testedThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration runs its Vehicle Research and Testing Center in East Liberty. The center works at the Transportation Research Center, an independent proving ground.
