About Bellefontaine, Ohio
Bellefontaine is a city of 14,115 people and the seat of Logan County, 48 miles northwest of Columbus. Its French name means "beautiful spring," for the springs in the area, but locals say "bell fountain." Around 1777 the Shawnee war chief Blue Jacket moved his band here from the Scioto River. The Revolutionary War had reached the Ohio Country, and he wanted to be nearer his British allies at Detroit, so the settlement became Blue Jacket's Town.
In 1786, at the start of the Northwest Indian War, Kentucky militia led by Benjamin Logan destroyed the town. Logan County is named for him. Blue Jacket's people moved northwest to the Maumee River, and in the 1800s Revolutionary War veterans from Virginia and other states began settling the land. Bellefontaine was platted in 1820 and incorporated in 1835. Two years later the Mad River & Lake Erie Railroad brought the first tracks into town.
- America's first concrete streetIn 1891 George Bartholomew tried paving with Portland cement, which builders had used only for stone work. Crews poured an 8-foot strip beside the Logan County Courthouse, on its west side along Main Street, where horses were tied. It held, so Court Avenue, south of the courthouse, came next. Main Street later got asphalt, but Court Avenue kept its concrete and joined the National Register in 1974. A statue of Bartholomew marked its centennial.
- A Big Four railroad townIn the 1890s the Big Four Railroad built a main terminal here, and its roundhouse was the biggest anywhere between New York and St. Louis. Up to ninety freight trains and more than forty passenger trains passed through each day. From 1942 to 1946 Margaret Clingerman and 170 women kept a free canteen on the platform, serving over 700,000 soldiers, sailors and marines. The terminal shut down in 1983.
- Ohio's highest pointCampbell Hill, at 1,549.09 feet, was first called Hogue's Hill, perhaps for Solomon Hoge, who deeded the land in 1830. Charles D. Campbell bought it in 1898. In 1950 August Wagner's family gave the hill and 57.5 acres to the U.S. government, which posted the 664th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron there in 1951 to watch for Soviet attacks. The base closed in 1969, and a vocational school opened on the summit in 1974.
- Schine's Holland TheatreThe Holland opened in the 1930s as a live theater and was later split into a five-screen movie house before it closed in 1998. It joined the National Register in 2001. After about a year of renovation it reopened for live shows in 2019.
