About Lewistown, Ohio

Lewistown is a community of 202 people in Washington Township, Logan County, 8 miles northwest of Bellefontaine. In the 1820s it was a village of Seneca and Shawnee people, many of them moved here under the Treaty of Fort Meigs, signed on September 29, 1817. The village marked the eastern end of their reservation, which ran west to the headwaters of Loramie Creek, and it took its name from Captain John Lewis, a Shawnee leader.

The Treaty of Lewistown in 1829 ended the reservation and sent about 300 people west of the Mississippi River. White families began settling the township in the summer of 1832, right after the Indians left. Henry Hanford, a Connecticut man, bought 825 acres in and around Lewistown by 1835. He kept a general store there and served as the village's first postmaster, with mail arriving once a week. His brother-in-law Daniel Conley, a shoemaker, built the village's first frame house.

“The first schoolhouse north of the Greenville treaty line was located in Lewistown.”
History of Logan County, 1880
  • A mill, an inn, a distilleryA mill went up in 1835, followed by a steam sawmill, and an inn opened its doors in 1840. A distillery started in 1862, but the government seized it when its owners failed to file tax returns. A tannery rounded out the township's industries by 1880.
  • School in a log cabin, 1833Lewistown's first school met in a log cabin in 1833. Classes moved to a frame schoolhouse in 1840, and in 1874 the village set up the Lewistown special school district. That district survives today as the Indian Lake Local Schools.
  • Walter Alston's first teamWalter Alston taught shop and coached basketball at the Lewistown school while playing in the Dodgers' minor league system. Made to choose by the school board, he picked baseball, then managed the club in Brooklyn and Los Angeles for 23 seasons and reached the Hall of Fame. When his old Lewistown players came to Dodgers games in Cincinnati, he introduced them as "my first team." The Indian Lake High School gym bears his name.
  • The Lewistown ReservoirIndian Lake, whose shore town of Russells Point sits 4 miles to the north, was once called the Lewistown Reservoir after this village. Rennick Creek runs along the south side of Lewistown and flows west 1.5 miles to the Great Miami River.
