About East Rochester, Ohio
East Rochester is an unincorporated community of 224 people in West Township, Columbiana County, in the valley of Sandy Creek. Before anyone laid out lots here, the crossing already had a post office called Emmons Cross-Roads, and Jacob St. Clair kept its first store.
In December 1834 J. G. Williard platted the hamlet for its owners, Thomas Emmons and Isaac Davis, and it was first known officially as Rochester. Since Ohio already had another town by that name, the post office used the name East Rochester instead, and a post office with that name has served the community since 1840.
- The railroad arrives in 1852The Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railroad was finished through the village in 1852. Joseph Coulson, who was already the postmaster, took on the job of station agent as well, so one man looked after both the mail and the new depot.
- In the Sandy Creek valleyEast Rochester grew up beside Sandy Creek, which runs west into the Tuscarawas River and on to the Ohio. Today U.S. Route 30 passes through the community, which sits about 20 miles east of Canton, and Minerva, the nearest incorporated town, is 4 miles to the west.
